Editorial policy, digitization and scientific exploitation of excavation archives, training, and knowledge sharing are among the priorities of the Syrian-French Archaeological Mission of Ras Shamra – Ugarit. Twelve volumes of the Ras Shamra – Ugarit series have been published since 2008, including monographs and collective works. The latter include 160 articles written by more than one hundred different authors. This volume, edited by Valérie Matoïan, Juan-Pablo Vita, and Bernard Geyer, is the thirteenth.
The volume Ras Shamra – Ugarit XXIX is the third issue of the operation devoted to Archaeology, Heritage and Archives, whose objective is to bring together studies focusing more specifically on the scientific exploitation of the archives of the ancient excavations of the Archaeological Mission of Ras Shamra. It follows volumes XXV (2017) and XXVI (2019) of the series and provides the scientific community with the results of ongoing research, the aim of which is to publish all the unpublished material, in particular by establishing exhaustive corpora, while highlighting themes that respond to several of the current research challenges in the field of Ugaritic studies.
The mission's activities and publications are supported by the Consultative Commission for Archaeological Research Abroad of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (Paule Dumesnil Prize 2020 and Maspero Prize 2023), the CNRS, the Collège de France, the Fondation du Collège de France and the Fondation Hugot du Collège de France.
