"The time for flowers has arrived!" was displayed in the streets of Paris in the mid-19th century. century. Conceived by a merry band of polymath journalists between 1846 and 1847, Animated Flowers had just hatched. They haven't faded since.
As composite as a choice bouquet, our new complete two-volume edition brings together texts of a varied genre, sometimes phantasmagorical, sometimes practical, which invite us to better understand flowers, whether rustic or parked, wild or domesticated. One thing is certain, they are adored! And introduced with tenderness tinged with humor by the author of Journey around my garden , Alphonse Karr.
A first volume, narrated by Taxile Delord, tells the stories of a group of flowers that have become women. The famous caricaturist Jean-Jacques Grandville brings this enchanting plant life to life through some fifty admirable plates of poetry and wit, where you can admire Pansy, Violet, Sunflower, Lily and Poppy.
In a second volume, Count Foelix, one of Louis-François Raban's pseudonyms, offers a manual that is as practical as it is entertaining for introducing students to botany and horticulture. Rosalie de Constant, a brilliant naturalist of the Enlightenment, brings liveliness and depth to the species collected.
Our illustrated edition is based on the 1867 Garnier Frères edition, which includes the engravings by J.-J. Grandville, to which we have added a selection from the plates in Rosalie de Constant's herbarium. It is revised, annotated, and prefaced by Audrey Dominguez.
