To understand the Syrian and Egyptian pilgrimage routes to the Hejaz, in the northwest of Saudi Arabia, Dr. Ali Ibrahim Al-Ghabban collected traces of all kinds left on these desert trails by Muslim pilgrims: buildings, ceramics, inscriptions and graffiti (some of which are very old and important for the history of the beginnings of Islam). This work is based on both surveys and surface surveys as well as archaeological excavations, and combines the precise study of the different sites with the broader study of the historical context which accounts, over time, for the phases of activity or dormancy of these stopping places. It also shows the attention that the various Muslim powers, in particular the Ottomans, paid to the maintenance of these stopping places, their water supply, and their security. It therefore opens widely onto History.
