Pierre Soulages (1919-2022) left a lasting mark on the international art scene, like a bridge between two centuries of modernity.
To pay tribute to the painter from Rodez following his death on October 25, 2022, the Soulages Museum is presenting a retrospective, as complete as possible, of his last period of creation, situated between the major exhibition at the Centre Pompidou (2009-2010) and his final painting produced in the Sète studio, dated May 15, 2022.
This is an opportunity to confirm that the late work reserves its share of discovery and, above all, that the materialization of a strong creative energy remains intact: large-scale works, such as the five stele paintings of 2019, a paste, a black worked with a blade to accentuate the brilliance, the even more striking light effects, the reintroduction of white... Chance held its own there. Those who were lucky enough to visit the studios of Sète and Paris in recent years know to what extent Soulages worked with passion and tenacity, tirelessly, until the end and without looking back. Liberated.
The latest works have the subtlety of Lampedusa's famous quote: the perceptual tremor tested by the past, fidelity to oneself and yet new solutions, escapes, enrichments. Change, while returning to fundamentals.
