On the occasion of the 2022 France-Portugal crossover season, the Musée de la Toile de Jouy invites its public to discover the Pereira de Sampaio collection of chitas from Alcobaça. With more than fifty pieces on display, this exhibition is based on an in-depth and unprecedented study of this traditional Portuguese fabric, considered the most famous printed cotton canvas in Portugal. Made between the late 18th and 19th centuries in Alcobaça—a city in western Portugal developed around an important monastery of the Cîteaux order— chitas , like toile de Jouy, contributed to the influence of their territory and still influence contemporary design today. A remarkable collection of richly decorated bedspreads, scarves, and napkins bear witness to what is considered one of the major productions of Portuguese printed textiles.
