The book is based on research carried out on the Carnac menhir fields using methods used by geomorphologists to study relief.
Its first objective is to present the results of an analysis carried out at several levels: that of the menhirs, which come largely from granite rocks already exposed to the open air before being erected by man, that of the sites on which the alignments are built, then that of the reliefs found on these sites before the Neolithic. In this perspective, the work aims to provide an example of reciprocal contributions of geomorphology to the study of archaeological sites and of the latter to the study of reliefs, in this case granite, thus to illustrate the interest of a joint examination of megaliths, their location and their environment following a geoarchaeological approach.
A second objective, of a practical nature, is to provide visitors with the means to discover for themselves facts relating to the characteristics, origins and environment of the alignments, starting from the observation of the menhirs on the ground, their surface and their shapes, their arrangement and their distribution.
Beyond that, the book aims to show the usefulness of a common heritage, archaeological and geomorphological approach, as well as a joint popularization of knowledge relating to the menhir fields of the Carnac region and their environment.
