The Museum of Relief Plans, created in 1943 and now in the process of redeploying its collections, is the heir to some 260 models, representing 150 fortified towns, built between 1668, at the initiative of Louis XIV, and 1873.
This unique collection, classified as a historical monument since 1927, now contains around a hundred relief maps.
Taking as its starting point the relief plan of the Mont-Dauphin fortress (Hautes-Alpes), built by Vauban from 1693 to improve the defense of the Alpine border and block the road to Italy, and that of the Fenestrelle fortress, located in Piedmont, on the other side of the border, and whose construction began in 1728 and was to last more than a hundred years, the exhibition examines the relationship between France and Italy through the evolution of their border from the 16th to the 20th century and the defense of the territory on both sides. As a natural demarcation line, the Alps reflect the complex mechanisms at work in the notion of border, which today more than ever needs to be re-examined.
Exhibition in Paris, at the Musée des Plans-Reliefs from June 2, 2023 to January 8, 2024
