Léon Spilliaert is considered one of the most important Belgian painters, alongside R. Magritte, J. Ensor, P. Delvaux.... Yet, he is less well known... A man of disturbing solitudes, of infinite perspectives, Spilliaert (1881-1946) surprises, disconcerts with unclassifiable works, inventing a singular symbolism of the inner night. Spilliaert was born in Ostend. His nocturnal walks in the deserted city would be a source of inspiration for his work. He was almost entirely self-taught. He was influenced by the artistic movements of the fin de siècle: Symbolism and Expressionism. Spilliaert was an explorer of the unconscious and existential anxieties at a time when the human sciences were advancing in their understanding of the psyche. He was passionate about Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Chateaubriand and Lautréamont. The catalog focuses on the years 1896 to 1919, the most intense in the artist's career, and presents his most radical works.
