Léon Haffner (1881-1972) was passionate about maritime matters from childhood, particularly in Le Havre where he spent his holidays. A precocious draftsman, boats were his favorite models. He used his observational skills to depict them perfectly. He became known in 1907 by winning second prize in a drawing competition organized by the French Maritime League, which he later joined as an architect-librarian; he left as director at the age of 73.
His prolific work is characterized by the plurality of techniques used. Oil, gouache, stencil, photo, drawing; he illustrated a large number of works relating to the sea and worked in particular for magazines such as Le Bulletin, Le Journal de la marine, Le Yacht Club de France, and Le Grand Larousse. He also took up the pen to recount part of French maritime history, which he illustrated himself.
