Winner of the Grand Prix de l'Académie at the age of twenty-two, Louis Gauffier arrived in Rome in 1784 and settled permanently in Italy, where he died prematurely in 1801. Witness to the fascinating world of the Grand Tour, from the end of the Ancien Régime to the beginnings of the Revolution and the campaigns of General Bonaparte, Gauffier experienced a period of radical transformations that influenced his life and his art.
Initially a history painter in Rome, he produced compositions marked by neoclassical taste, which reflected his fascination with the archaeological discoveries of his time.
In Florence, he became the portrait painter of travelers from all over Europe.
By placing his models in landscapes that combine the monuments of the Tuscan capital and the beauties of nature, he develops a formula that combines intimacy, charm and relaxation.
He practices outdoor painting, studying trees and rocks, atmosphere and light, which he transposes into landscapes that herald the inventions of the 19th century.
Gauffier's friendship with François-Xavier Fabre, founder of the Montpellier museum, explains his representation in the museum's collections for nearly two centuries.
This catalog is the first monographic work dedicated to him. Through more than a hundred paintings and drawings, it offers an insight into a sensitive and visionary artist, in the light of Italy.
