The Wish of Marguerite Maeght is the catalogue for the exhibition being held at the Draguignan Museum from 7 June to 22 September 2024, dedicated to the exceptional commission Marguerite Maeght made to Marc Chagall, Jean Bazaine, Raoul Ubac and Diego Giacometti for the decoration of the Sainte-Roseline chapel. In 1968, Aimé and Marguerite Maeght welcomed their first grandson. For Marguerite Maeght, there is no doubt that Saint Roseline heard her prayers.
In gratitude to the Provençal saint, she undertook to fully finance the restoration of the old chapel of Les Arcs-sur-Argens, which was dedicated to her. In addition to the pre-existing ornamental decoration, Marguerite Maeght called upon the talents of Marc Chagall, Jean Bazaine, Raoul Ubac, and Diego Giacometti to endow the place with new works. Since then, stained-glass windows, sculptures, and mosaics have stood alongside the enshrined body of Saint Roseline, like a modern ex-voto, testifying to the alliance between modernity and mastery of traditional skills.
The catalogue Le Voeu de Marguerite Maeght expands on the exhibition's narrative by revisiting the genesis of a commission that is as personal as it is atypical. An essay is devoted to Saint Roseline, a Carthusian nun who lived between the 13th and 14th centuries, focusing on the birth of her legend in historiography and the artistic production dedicated to her in the 17th and 19th centuries.
The book also provides an opportunity to explore Aimé and Marguerite Maeght's professional and personal connections with the artists who worked on the new decor and their relationship to the sacred, each of which is part of a very personal form of relationship with the divine. The collection, written by art historians, is based on various archival documents, preparatory studies, and previously unpublished testimonies.
The Wish of Marguerite Maeght is the catalog of the exhibition which will be held at the Draguignan museum from June 7 to September 22, 2024.
