Togo, well before German colonization and Franco-
British, experimented with several ways of managing the
men and territories. In the attempt to describe this management,
in its hierarchy also, the role of chiefs or kings
goes hand in hand with the cultural history of the territory and its relationships
with neighboring West African countries.
The Togo of Kings explores and documents a field that is both spiritual
and artistic: the imagination of ancient royalty and chieftaincy,
and its permanence through time, despite the vicissitudes
of history. Spiritual life goes hand in hand with the implementation
place of rituals, themselves generating various objects or artifacts
related to the exercise of the powers of kings and chiefs, resulting
of original creations or borrowings.
The exhibition offers a tour based on the collected objects
among the current descendants of the kingdoms, chiefdoms and
traditional communities; it also devotes a place to
contemporary creativity highlighting the work of photographers,
of directors, or of the visual artist Sokey Edorh who questions
the symbol of union, very present in speeches and
worldview of royal societies.
This reference work will be an opportunity to dive into the heart of
royalties and chiefdoms of Togo.
