"Temples" collection.
The temple of Deir Shelouit, located on the left bank of the Theban River south of Medinet Habu, remained undiscovered for a long time. An edition princeps was published in the 1980s. Since then, cleaning operations carried out by ARCE have made the texts much more readable, which has allowed a revised edition of the inscriptions, accompanied by their translation.
The temenos is accessed through a propylon. The temple, built in Roman times, was decorated under Hadrian and Antoninus.
The decoration and texts were carefully crafted. Isis, "who resides in the mountain of the west/the mysterious mountain," is honored on the back wall of the naos; the hymns of the propylon and the door of the naos are dedicated to her. Wife of Osiris, buried in Djemê, she ensures his worship and that of the dead gods. The location of the temple on "the divine path of Montu" makes it a processional chapel where the god of Ermant stopped during his annual journey to Djemê, during the Khoiak festivals, to worship Osiris. Montu's role in the four cities of the "Palladium of Thebes" is inscribed in the decoration of the naos, whose corners it protects. Osiris is the beneficiary of two hymns, known from versions on papyrus and stone.
