This work offers a translation of the "Ritual of Embalming" written on the "Papyrus Boulaq III" preserved in the Cairo Museum. The proposed restorations and corrections for the last pages of this papyrus come from the "Papyrus Louvre 5.158".
Discovered in a late Theban tomb around the middle of the 19th century, Papyrus Boulaq III has been dated to the years 50-55 AD, that is to say to the reign of Nero. 2.32 m long and 28.5 cm high, it is written in hieratic.
The "Louvre Papyrus 5.188" must have the same origin and is dated to the same years. It only provides the remains of three pages of text corresponding to the last two pages of the "Boulaq Papyrus III".
The "Embalming Ritual" is divided into 11 "Chapters":
- Chapter 1: Perfuming the head;
- Chapter 2: Perfuming the body;
- Chapter 3: Deposit of viscera;
- Chapter 4: Back preparation;
- Chapter 5: Warning regarding body manipulation;
- Chapter 6: Gilding nails;
- Chapter 7: Head Wrap;
- Chapter 8: End of head treatment;
- Chapter 9: Hand Preparation;
- Chapter 10: Embalming of the fingers;
- Chapter 11: Preparation of the legs.
