This work is dedicated to the Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus (New York Academy of Medicine Library). Nearly 4.7 m long and about 33 cm high and written in hieratic, this papyrus is dated to the 17th Dynasty, which ruled Upper Egypt at the time, in the midst of Hyksos domination over Lower Egypt, at the end of the Second Intermediate Period (c. 1600 BC).
This work proposes the translation/transliteration of the text of the 22 Columns contained in the Papyrus. Following each of the 48 surgical cases mentioned therein, a medical commentary, inseparable from lexical, syntactic and semantic considerations, is proposed.
Finally, four Annexes present respectively:
- the schematic arrangement of the text in each column;
- the reproduction of each column including, on the facing pages, on the left the black and white photographic image and on the right the corresponding hieroglyphic transcription with identification of the headings, these reproductions being made from the 1930 edition of the Papyrus by James Henry Breasted;
- an Egyptian-French Lexicon relating to the "Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus";
- a French-Egyptian Lexicon relating to the "Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus".
