Amathus is one of the oldest kingdoms in Cyprus. French excavations on the site of the city revealed, as early as the 1970s, the remains of the palace of the local kings. Archaeological exploration there has provided sources of prime importance for archaeologists, historians, and art historians seeking to understand the phenomenon of the genesis and subsequent evolution of the small Cypriot kingdoms or principalities in the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean. The finds, which revealed imposing architectural structures belonging to several successive states, also document palatial life in the Geometric, Archaic, and Classical periods (from the 9th to the 4th century BC), as well as the contacts that the local administration had established and developed with neighboring regions during its centuries-old history.
