From reality to fiction, this book offers a sentimental and lively stroll through the gallery of portraits of the celebrities who, directly or indirectly, inspired the characters of In Search of Lost Time , aristocrats, bourgeois, artists, cocottes, actresses, all familiar to Marcel Proust: in total, 120 portraits, including 40 previously unpublished, reproduced from the original plates taken from the archives of the photographer Paul Nadar. Three texts shed new light on the work of the writer as well as that of the photographer as well as on their models: a reflection on the role of these photos in our memory as readers; an analysis of the link between Proust and his key characters; finally, an update on the principle of retouching photographs by Paul Nadar, which allowed the models to hope to tend towards the ideal.
