To the light of the sun, to the shimmering of the sea, to the moon rising above the orange trees in bloom, to the wind that slithered through the familiar alleys, to the intimate beauty of a Mediterranean Beirut, there came to join a man who loved only poetry, who carried in his eyes the light of his spirit, the warmth of his heart, that is to say, he came to add his own light to that of the place and to that of those he was going to meet. This man was Gabriel Bounoure and we were his students.
Around 1944 he founded a school in Beirut that we later compared to the schools of German Romanticism, those of Novalis and Herman Hesse. In a city whose youth was like that of certain women whose beauty dooms them to a tragic fate, a dozen young men and women came, like moths to a lamp.
