Precious tableware, gold jewelry and engraved stones, residential decor, sought-after wines and gastronomic products, monumental city finery, and luxurious tomb furnishings—all these manifestations of luxury are characterized by expensive, rare materials, crafted by talented artisans. Their possession is ostentatious and superfluous. However, the threshold at which an artifact enters the category of luxury is not always clear: it changes according to the period, the place, and the scale. The luxury of individual finery, of the private home, of professional groups, of the prince, or of the city are not expressed in the same way and do not have the same vocation. This book brings together 14 communications from a conference held at the Musée de l'Arles Antique in 2017, around the exhibition on Ancient Luxury and the Berthouville Treasure. Based on recent discoveries and works, it questions this complex notion of luxury through the study of great treasures, funerary practices, monuments, the circulation of wealth and its hoarding.
