This book presents the "Book of Breathings" of ancient Egypt, whose use in later periods seems to have been limited to Upper Egypt. Most of the papyri that have come down to us are dated to the Roman period (c. 50-150 AD).
The "Book of Breaths" is actually composed of two main families that the Egyptians themselves sometimes called "First Documents of Breaths" and "Second Document of Breaths".
For the "First Book of Breathings", the papyrus studied here is:
- the “Papyrus of Kerâsher” (BM EA 9995).
Concerning the "Second Book of Breathings", three papyri are studied in this work:
- the "Papyrus of Taouat-shéryt" (Louvre N.3279),
- the "Kharet Papyrus" (Cairo 58007),
- the "Papyrus of Héter" (Cairo 58018),
There are also some papyri called "Abridgements of the "Book of Breathings"", five of which are presented here:
- the "Papyrus of Ankhhou-tchésemhéret" (Cairo 58009),
- the “Tsenharsiësis Papyrus” (Cairo 58010),
- the "First Papyrus of Apollo" (Cairo 58013),
- the "Second Papyrus of Apollo" (Cairo 58014),
- the "Papyrus of Aâpéhou (Cairo 58019).
