In 1759, at the request of his friend Grimm, Diderot was entrusted with the task of writing reports on the Salons, exhibitions organized by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in the Louvre Palace. These writings, published in the Correspondance littéraire, were admired by many 19th-century writers and critics. On the occasion of the commemoration of the tercentenary of the philosopher's birth, this work offers a synthesis of recent research on Diderot's links with the Arts and on his criteria for judging Beauty: Truth, Poetry, Magic. Through the presentation of works admired or decried by the writer, some of the greatest masters of the 18th century are honored: Boucher, Chardin, David, Falconet, Greuze, Houdon, Pigalle, Robert, Vernet, Vien, etc. The partnership between the Musée Fabre in Montpellier Agglomeration and the Fondation de l'Hermitage in Lausanne has brought together an exceptional collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings and engravings that form a remarkable panorama of French creativity in the time of Diderot.
