Chen Lemin (1930-2008)
A renowned specialist in the comparative study of Chinese and European civilizations, Chen Lemin was director of the Institute of European Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and president of the Chinese Association for European Studies.
He learned traditional calligraphy and painting at a very young age, and also developed a passion for European languages and literature, which he studied at Peking University. After becoming a member of the World Peace Council, he was sent on missions to Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, before turning to academic research in 1980. He has published around twenty books.
After his retirement in 1994, without interrupting his research and writing activities, he produced numerous calligraphy and paintings until his death in 2008. It was only after his death that a Chinese publishing house discovered his artistic work and published it.
