At a time when the architectural and urban heritage of modern Egypt is attracting growing interest, this volume offers the first overview of the knowledge and research developed in this new field of study. The result of an international conference held in Cairo in 1997, it explores in particular the activity of men from diverse backgrounds who practiced the profession of architect in Cairo and Alexandria during the 19th and 20th centuries. The work thus reveals, from a variety of approaches, a number of singular achievements and forms of intervention on the scale of the city that were previously ignored; it sheds light on the diversity of the professional careers of the "men of art" active during the period in question; finally, it seeks to highlight the multiplicity of sources that can be used, in Egypt as well as abroad, for the history of modern architecture and urban planning. In these various respects, this collective work opens up many avenues for future investigations, while making a specific contribution to the knowledge of the constructed landscape of Cairo and Alexandria, and beyond that to the social and cultural history of pre-Nasserist Egypt.
