Jewelry design has long remained hidden from public view. Whether functional or the bearers of unfulfilled dreams, these paper jewels have nevertheless, since the 15th century, been the shadowy side of the models to which they often gave birth. This book presents around a hundred drawings, mainly from the Van Cleef & Arpels Collection on Jewelry Culture, dating from the second half of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. It sheds light for the first time on this totally unknown aspect of the decorative arts, in which anonymous artisans and artists rub shoulders with the great figures of jewelry, Tiffany, Lalique, Vever, or renowned workshops such as Paillet, Brédillard and Mellerio Borgnis. Through the study of its technique, its authors or its use, the book, which accompanies the exhibition at the School of Jewelry Arts, from May 8, 2021, allows us to grasp the issues and the richness of this medium, at once a tool, an archival document and a true work of art.
