After The Memory of Thebes and Ramses II and the Ramesseum (L'Harmattan 2015 and 2019), this is the final installment of a trilogy devoted to the millennia-old history of Egyptian Thebes. The authors focus exclusively on the city's west bank, the "Beautiful West" of the ancient Egyptians.
Since the dawn of time, this territory has been associated not only with death but also with life. During the Pharaonic era, temples were built here, festivals were celebrated, and the rulers of the New Kingdom were piously buried in a famous valley. During the Greco-Roman period, people sometimes came from far and wide to see the "syringes" or hear the famous Colossus of Memnon "sing." After the abandonment of pagan cults, Christianity established itself there before Islam, in turn, came to write a new page in its landscape.
Based on an extensive search for place names, from the Pharaonic era to the present day, this book reveals the long, rich and sometimes tumultuous history of this geographical area, now classified as a World Heritage Site.
