At the end of a dinner between a banker and one of his friends, the latter wonders how this "big businessman and notable hoarder" can reconcile the exercise of his profession with supposed anarchist convictions. Through Socratic dialogue, this pamphlet castigates the shameless sophistries of a good "intellectual" society that prides itself on its revolutionary spirit: the criticism irresistibly evokes that of the "caviar left."
First published in 1922, The Anarchist Banker is the only story in the strict sense that Pessoa ever completed. He was so attached to this text that he signed it with his real name and arranged for its English translation, hoping for a European "career" for it.
