The exhibition aims to highlight the figure of François Boucher (1703-1770), a major painter in the service of Louis XV and the Marquise de Pompadour, represented in the museum's collections by four paintings related to theater and opera. Three of them were certainly commissioned by Madame de Pompadour to commemorate her theatrical performances at Versailles in the roles of Issé and Sylvie (after Ovid's Metamorphoses and Tasso's Aminta). The last painting is undoubtedly a project for a stage set. The exhibition seeks to explore a little-known aspect of François Boucher's career: his active and ongoing contribution to opera and court, institutional, and fairground theater. The exhibition brings together some sixty works (paintings, prints, drawings, librettos, scores, tapestries, art objects, photography, and costumes) from the 18th century to the present day. The aim is to highlight the adaptation of Boucher's iconic paintings into derivative objects, from tapestry to decorative arts through engraving. Works by contemporary artists, including costumes, will also be presented to highlight the way Boucher continues to inspire artists.
