From the 15th century to the mid-17th century, paneling decorated the walls of aristocratic residences, civil or religious buildings. In living or reception rooms, studies and libraries, chapels and oratories, this woodwork increased comfort, insulating against cold and humidity and improving the acoustics of rooms. It concealed imperfections in the building and protected the walls, sometimes receiving rich ornaments (moldings, carved, gilded or painted decorations).

Revealing the aspirations and interests of the patrons, the paneling is also an illustration of the art of carpentry applied to interior decoration, that of walls, but also doors, niches, etc.

Following the principle of the collection of Albums of the Center for Research on Historical Monuments, the work develops in its first part the different aspects of the creation of paneling from the 15th to the 17th century. Materials, assembly techniques, design, production and installation are all aspects studied here. A typology of paneling in three groups is developed in the second part, through around thirty examples distributed throughout France and illustrated by 200 surveys.

The summary takes the reader successively to numerous sites including Chaudes-Aigues (Cantal), Colmar (Haut-Rhin), Blois (Loir-et-Cher), Chambord (Loir-et-Cher), Écouen (Val-D'Oise), Haute-Goulaine (Loire-Atlantique) and Balleroy (Calvados).
