The theme Life and Death concerns us all. At the MAS Antwerp, it occupies two of the five floors devoted to the permanent collections and addresses the great existential questions: Where do we come from? Where are we going? What happens after death? In the section entitled Humans and Gods, visitors will discover the great diversity of meanings given to life and the intense need to perform rituals in every corner of the world. In the second section, The Underworld and the Overworld, more than 500 objects illustrate the inextricable link between life and death. These bear witness to the interaction that humans, especially in Central and South America, have always maintained with the worlds of the gods, ancestors, and spirits. The entire Paul and Dora Janssen-Arts collection of pre-Columbian objects is on display, reflecting the passion of European collectors for these artifacts from the New World.
