Rumor was omnipresent in the Middle Ages, sparing no part of society between the 5th and 15th centuries. It has rarely been approached as a phenomenon of communication between equals (among the elites as well as the humble), in socially constructive uses and revealing fears, but also demands, hopes, imaginations and beliefs. It is to renew this historical approach that this book cross-references the results of research conducted on the status, construction, uses and scope of rumor. The contempt shown by the elites towards it is not enough to make us forget that it is above all a means of federating.
