The Greek and Latin texts in the volume (all in the original text with translation) show how the Ancients imagined the settlement of the Hellenes in Greece and their swarming movement around the Mediterranean, from the "dark ages" to the time of Alexander, most often relying on oracles from Pythian Apollo. They also show the progressive expansion of Rome, from the time of the kings and the Republic to the imperial era: but Roman colonization follows a radically different model of representation, that of the oil stain, which integrates the new provinces into the imperium of Rome instead of giving autonomy to the new cities.
