The Rose is Without a Why is composed of excerpts from The Cherubic Pilgrim, a title expressing the incessant quest of the contemplative, and a masterpiece by Angelus Silesius (1624-1677). A doctor by profession, a Protestant converted to Catholicism and becoming a Franciscan priest, Silesius was influenced by the works of Tauler, the great disciple of Meister Eckart and Jacob Böhme, and became passionate about mystical poetry.
Silesius renewed the Christian view of the world by valuing interiority, the experience of God beyond any formulation. His meditations, sometimes paradoxical in their expression, recall today what we know of the great Eastern intuitions, while being part of a current that, throughout time, has inspired Christian mysticism.
