The relationship between oral and written language in ancient Greek culture; Plato's treatment of myth, considered primarily from the perspective of his political project (Republic, Laws); this philosopher's critical examination of different types of knowledge: while these themes are well-known, Giovanni Cerri takes them up and crosses them with a very contemporary issue, that of communication and its challenges (ethical, pedagogical, political and poetic). This approach allows him to shed new light on Plato's work and, beyond that, on ancient Greek culture, building bridges between this culture and our own. Giovanni Cerri, born in 1940, is an antiquarian, historian of literature and philosophy; he taught in Naples, then in Rome. His field of study covers a vast area, from archaic Greece to Rome and neo-Latin authors, from Homer to Dante, from ancient comedy to theories of communication. Like Bruno Gentili (who wrote the preface to this work), he shows a predominant interest in cultural history, with a particular emphasis on questions of reception and transmission. Myrto Gondicas is a Hellenist and translator (Aeschylus, Euripides, Aristophanes).
