Anne-Marie Garcia, curator of prints and photography at the École nationale supérieure aux Beaux-Arts in Paris, presents a collection of masterpieces from the institution's photography collection. Wandering through this documentary collection is like diving into the heart of the School, reliving its teaching, the quality of its collections, and the incredible history of the moving medium of photography. Bringing together the words of each and every one of them—professors and personalities of the School, curators, photographers, and critics—this book explores all its twists and turns, in concert with Louis Rousselet, author of a guide dedicated to the School in 1888, which notably lets Charles Melville recount his daily life as a student painter at the Beaux-Arts. The book brings together more than 600 photographs by the greatest masters from the origins of photography to the present day. Several themes are explored: anatomy, drawing, the arts, ornament, architecture, France, the Orient, portraiture and Paris... The work is usefully supplemented with biographical notes for each of the photographers.
