A new edition, with a new cover, lace binding, and printing on unseparated double-page spreads, of this exceptional collection on Chinese painting, rich in more than two millennia of development and invention. Little known in the West, Chinese painting is invariably presented through reproductions of the same works from the Palace Museum in Taiwan and American collections. This selection reflects little of the reality and richness of the heritage that has come down to us. In association with Liu Jianlong, Emmanuelle Lesbre studied and photographed more than three hundred works, mostly unpublished, preserved in China, from the reserves of museums, archaeological institutes, or religious sanctuaries, most of which are inaccessible to the public. These masterpieces are approached thematically, following the genre classification in force at the Imperial Academy of Painting: religious painting, portraits of women, landscape painting, animal painting, painting of flowers and birds. To these traditional categories, the authors have added several others, including edifying painting, portraiture in general, scenes of morality, and the painting of scholars. Through its richness and originality, this work constitutes a veritable compendium that overturns and renews our vision of Chinese painting, with more than two millennia of development and invention. 450 illustrations, 80% of which are previously unpublished, illustrate the subject.

Emmanuelle Lesbre, a doctor of Chinese studies, holds a degree from the Department of Art History at the Central Institute of Fine Arts of China, obtained after six years of study in the country.

Liu Jianlong is a historian by training, a graduate expert from the Department of Art History at the Central Institute of Fine Arts of China. He is the author of scholarly works on painting and calligraphy.
