Arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in the German camp of Dora in 1944, François Le Lionnais continued the acts of resistance he had undertaken in Paris, notably by sabotaging the V2 missile guidance system he was tasked with building. But Le Lionnais had another type of activity that was just as vital in the eyes of his fellow prisoners… When he was not instructing the young deportee Jean Gaillard (who died in deportation) in the theory of numbers, mathematics, electricity, or chemistry, he described each day, during the duration of the roll call, which could last four hours, a different painting in the Louvre Museum, which he detailed with extraordinary precision, color by color, pictorial detail by pictorial detail… Painting at Dora is the brief account of this period.
Founder of Oulipo, chess theorist, creator of the first scientific radio broadcasts, chemical engineer, author of one of the shortest and most striking texts written on the Second World War – La Peinture à Dora –, short-lived companion of the PC, early resistance fighter arrested and deported by the Gestapo, François Le Lionnais (1901-1984) was all of these things. Simultaneously with the publication of the compilation of disparate archives ordered by Olivier Salon, Le Disparate, François Le Lionnais, Le nouvel Attila has decided to republish one of the rare autobiographical texts left by Le Lionnais, one of the shortest and most striking texts written on the camps: La Peinture à Dora.
