Today, caricature is understood as an "image tending, by deformation or accentuation of the features of a model, of the characters of a scene, to make them grotesque or laughable" (La Grande Encyclopédie Larousse). What about ancient societies? Most modern specialists in caricature have considered it to be an invention of the late 16th century, unsuited to the cultures and societies of the ancient world. Comparing for the first time on this subject the points of view of specialists in texts and images, this work aims to search for a possible ancient caricature, by discussing its conditions of existence, by trying to identify authors of caricature works, fields and artistic and literary genres more particularly suited to the production of caricatures, by also highlighting problems of sources or categorizations.
