Present in numerous national and international collections, the photographs of the Maison Bonfils constitute one of the most important photographic productions devoted to the Middle East in the second half of the 19th century. The Bonfils family set up a photographic studio in 1860 in Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort then in Alès before settling in Beirut in 1867 and traveling through Greece, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, in order to capture and market "views of the whole Orient". The collection of photographs, negatives, albums, stereoscopic views brought together in the exhibition thanks to the support of the Gallier collection and the Media Library of Architecture and Heritage (MAP), allows us to grasp the diversity and richness of the activity of the Maison Bonfils which consists of a collection of exceptional historical, anthropological and archaeological archives, witness to a now bygone era.
