This richly illustrated book traces the history of the Cosquer Cave, a unique prehistoric decorated site immersed in the Calanques of Marseille. The cave was frequented for millennia by hunter-gatherers of the Paleolithic period, between 33,000 and 19,000 years ago. They painted and engraved hundreds of signs and animal figures (horses, bison, ibexes, etc.) including marine animals unique in all cave art (seals and penguins). Partially submerged 9,000 years ago after the last ice age, the cave was rediscovered at the end of the last century and officially declared a cave in 1991, before being studied by scientists. This book shares all the beauty, emotion, and knowledge acquired at this extraordinary site, now threatened by rising sea levels linked to global warming. It also reveals the secrets of its replica, which will open to the public in Marseille in 2022. The book contains testimonies from divers and scientists who have studied the cave, and is extended with multimedia content for smartphones and tablets.
