The book event of a botanical treasure rediscovered
In 1780, Carl Schildbach, a simple zookeeper, began building what would become one of the most extraordinary botanical collections in the world, his library of 530 tree books.
For the first time, Éditions Martin de Halleux presents to the public a unique work bringing together the tree books from the Carl Schildbach collection.
Highly ambitious, the publication of this work brings together the best experts in Carl Schildbach's work with the best specialists in art publishing: renowned authors (botanist, novelist, academic), photographers, photoengravers, graphic designers, papermakers, printers, manufacturers... all will be mobilized to produce this exceptional book.
In 1780 Carl Schildbach began his immense work of creating magnificent little theatres of botanical life, collecting, each season, seeds, branches, leaves and bark from each of the forest plants in all their forms.
Patiently, he cuts out and assembles flowers from fabric or paper, which he then recreates, and fruits which he models in wax.
Dazzled, the Frenchman Georges de Buffon will offer to install his tree library in Paris, when Catherine II, Empress of Russia , offered him 2,000 gold pieces. It was finally William IX of Hesse-Kassel who will integrate the exceptional library into its collections and will allocate to the modest Schildbach the handsome annual pension of 500 gold thalers, a sum which he received until his death, at the canonical age of 87 years and 7 months
After his research in the forest, Carl Schilbach returns home and builds his tree books. By candlelight, he reconstructs the leaves and flowers from paper or fabric, sculpts and paints the fruits from wax, and assembles them with natural elements gathered in the forest. Each box is constructed from the wood of the variety presented.
