This book is an unprecedented attempt to rewrite a hitherto incomplete history. The official history of French Guiana is based on the writings of a few chroniclers who visited the region in past centuries. The authors of this work have decided to rehabilitate the Amerindian point of view, supported by archaeology and oral tradition. The history of French Guiana, and more generally of the Amazon and the Americas, is marked by a major rupture in the future of the Amerindians, caused by the arrival of the first Europeans. There is no justification for telling the human story of this history through a Western prism alone. The previous episodes are just as relevant for understanding the complete settlement of the territory. Here, at last, is a practical example of a history written in equal parts!
