Archaeology in recent decades has amply demonstrated that the primitive populations of Israel and Judah were not the bloodthirsty invaders described in the Book of Numbers, Deuteronomy, and the Book of Joshua, but rather emerged from Canaanite soil. This work is a rereading of the Books of Genesis and Exodus, based primarily on their earliest Hebrew texts, and shows that they were constructed from prior elements related to the polytheistic themes of Canaan and Babylon.
