The Seleucid kingdom, heir in the East to Alexander's conquests, brought together extremely diverse populations, but few sources adopt the point of view of the local non-Greek communities integrated into this vast whole. The Babylonian texts, written on clay by populations linked to local temples, therefore occupy a special place that fully justifies their importance in the recent historiographical revival of Hellenistic studies. But their authors are also the heirs of a thousand-year-old Mesopotamian history, which must be taken into account, otherwise they will be misunderstood. This book therefore aims to provide easy access to these documents, which does justice to their multiple influences, Greco-Macedonian on the one hand, Sumero-Akkadian on the other. By providing a new translation of a selection of particularly significant texts, accompanied by commentaries and appendices, it gives the reader the keys to direct access to documentation that deserves its place within Hellenistic studies.
