With the birth of universities in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, a new category of individuals appeared in the social landscape of the West, professing to study, think, and teach. At the crossroads of history, anthropology, and sociology, this study reveals the strategies used by this new intellectual community to assert itself as an autonomous category in the social and political landscape of the late Middle Ages. By observing the numerous rhetorical and gestural manifestations of the medieval idea of honor, the author seeks to describe the formation of a professional identity specific to the masters, scholars, and officers of the University of Paris until the end of the 15th century. This self-examination of the medieval university thus highlights some of the founding principles of this centuries-old institution.
