The Eunuch of Terence was in Antiquity its author's most beloved play and undoubtedly one of the greatest successes in the history of Latin theater, before becoming a classic of school literature in Late Antiquity and being imitated in a Christian and largely watered-down version in the Middle Ages. Typical of the alliance between comedy of intrigue and comedy of action, it offers a constant alternation of scenes of unbridled humor and more "serious" moments where particularly subtle social and psychological issues are revealed under the comic mask. The theater of Terence requires, to be fully understood, attention to the complex dramaturgical threads that weave the relationships between the characters, to the effects induced by literary and intertextual games but also and above all to the mechanism of the spectacle itself. This book offers a new translation and reading accompaniment to Terence's The Eunuch, focusing on dramaturgy and the role of language and spectacular data in the construction of the comic plot. Bruno Bureau is Professor of Latin Language and Literature at the Université Jean Moulin-Lyon 3, specializing in poetry in Late Antiquity. Christian Nicolas is Professor of Latin Language and Literature at the Université Jean Moulin-Lyon 3, specializing in Latin linguistics.
