The Phocaean adventure evokes the story of the encounter between Greeks, Iberians and Gauls in the northwestern Mediterranean during the 1st millennium BC. The territories located between the southern slope of the Pyrenees and the Alps were the scene of moments of sharing and exchange, but also of conflicts between various Mediterranean peoples. From the East to the West, from exploratory navigations to the establishment of the first exchanges and then to the permanent settlement on the spot of individuals or communities from distant horizons, the Phocaean Greeks, originally from the region of Ionia in Asia Minor, left a lasting mark on the space of the northwestern Mediterranean. As part of a much more global movement, which, from the Black Sea to the Iberian Peninsula, is that of Greek colonization in the Archaic period, the relationships and partnerships quickly established with local societies not only accelerated the development of trade but also favored processes of cultural interaction. The consequence was not just a transformation of indigenous societies, but a global structural evolution of the worlds then in contact, based on the establishment of original relationships and increased integration in the Mediterranean space. This catalog accompanies and extends the exhibition at the Lattera archaeological site - Henri Prades museum which, through nearly 400 works, tells the story of this encounter, original and emblematic in several ways, in the territories ranging from Nikaia (Nice) to Emporios (Empúries).
