The predynastic necropolis of Kom el-Khilgan (eastern Delta) was the subject of four excavation campaigns, from 2002 to 2005, as part of the IFAO projects. Several test pits were carried out, which revealed a funerary complex of great interest for better understanding the major cultural changes that occurred in Egypt during the 4th millennium . Two hundred and thirty-nine tombs were excavated, which clearly present two different complexes in terms of their burial methods and funerary material. One belongs to the Lower Egyptian cultures and can be dated to the first half of the 4th millennium , the other to the Naqada cultures (Upper Egypt), which occupied the second half of the 4th millennium until the emergence of the State, around 3000 BC.
This work consists of two parts: the complete catalogue of the tombs, described by the anthropologists who excavated them, and a summary which aims, in conclusion, to reconsider, in the light of the observations made at Kom el-Khilgan, the phenomenon of "Naqadian expansion", which is much discussed today.
