His snowy landscapes, his expression of light and shadow, and his reflections on water are remarkable and make Kawase Hasui one of the greatest artists of Shin hanga prints (new prints of the 20th century). A tireless traveler, he traversed his country in search of original landscapes, eager to share with us the beauty of the archipelago's coasts and mountains. Passionate about drawing from a young age, he opposed his family to become a painter before finding his true calling in prints.
His training in Western painting, as well as in traditional Nihonga painting, made him a complete artist. His prints emanate the nostalgic charm of the landscapes of the great masters of the Edo period. Yet they are different and resolutely new. His landscapes are imbued with great gentleness; nature, where a human presence blends harmoniously among the trees, rice paddies, and steep paths, is never hostile or idealized.
This exceptional book traces her career and presents nearly 250 prints and paintings, as well as around a hundred preparatory drawings and watercolors from the Ota City Folk Museum in Tokyo, which are being shown for the first time outside Japan. Brigitte Koyama-Richard has published numerous works on Japan, notably with Nouvelles éditions Scala: Yôkai, fantastique art japonais (2017), Le Japon à Paris (2018), Animaux dans la peinture japonaise (2020), Shin hanga.
20th Century Japanese Prints (2021) and Tokyo, New Capital (2022).
