In 527, Justinian became Eastern Roman Emperor. From then on, the ruler of Constantinople pursued a single goal: to reform, expand, unite his empire in the same Christian faith and make it the greatest power in the Mediterranean world.
Emperor "who never sleeps", he unified the law with the Justinian Code and new laws; he built numerous monuments, including the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople; he adopted an offensive religious policy towards pagans and heretics and engaged in the definition of orthodox doctrine.
Externally, he defended the empire against attacks from Persia and the barbarians. The reconquest of North Africa and Italy was one of his immense successes. While his long reign was not without its shadows, Justinian led the Roman Empire to its apogee.
