The ephemeral, almost indefinable nature of the joy of living probably explains the rarity of this notion in philosophy and, conversely, the frequency of its representations in art. It is indeed easier for a painter than for a philosopher to capture fleeting happiness. What images do artists give of the joy of living? Most of them celebrate the grace and spontaneity of the present moment. Joy is experienced here and now. It is more attached to being than to having, to being together than to the possession or consumption of wealth. This is how, throughout the centuries in the West, from Antiquity to the present day, sometimes going beyond prohibitions, the sun, play, friendship, family, celebration, the body, love, and laughter are celebrated by artists. Brought together for the exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, around a hundred works of art, from paintings to cinema, attempt to illustrate the art of happiness.
